Homes, doors and locks in Miami

Miami has condo towers with fob entry, older concrete-block-and-stucco homes and many businesses with roll-down shutters and commercial locks.

Common door hardware here includes cylinder deadbolts, knob and lever locksets, keypad and smart locks, and master-keyed systems in larger buildings.

Security, climate and access

Miami-Dade is in the Florida Building Code’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so replacement entry doors and their hardware are often impact-rated; salt air corrodes cylinders quickly.

A locksmith checks the door, frame and strike as well as the lock, because a good lock on a weak frame still fails.

Licensing and local rules

Florida has no state locksmith licence, and county locksmith licensing in places such as Miami-Dade and Hillsborough ended in July 2025 when state law pre-empted local occupational licences. Ask for business registration, insurance and identification before work starts.

Under Florida Statutes chapter 83, landlords of most rental units other than single-family homes and duplexes must make reasonable provision for locks and keys (s. 83.51), and s. 83.67 bars a landlord from changing the locks to remove a tenant.

Typical locksmith work in Miami

Lockouts, rekeying, lock changes, deadbolt and smart-lock installs, master-key systems, car key and fob work, and safe opening for owners. Every door is different, so the lock is checked on site before any work is quoted.

Have photo ID and proof that you live at or own the property ready — a reputable locksmith will ask before opening a door, car or safe.
